Thank you for the comment Ed. I've spent many holidays in Whitby and in recent years photographing the steps there. I always find it amusing that nearly everyone coming up or going down the steps are counting, especially children.

Very nice work and congratulations, but did you count them?

Artist's Description

The sun sets in the sea at Whitby for a few weeks either side of the longest day, but so far capturing the sun actually setting in the sea has eluded me. The weather looked promising so I decided to have another go on mid summer's eve, but after watching the sun gradually fall, it finally sank into a bank of heavy cloud just off Kettleness Point. I was making my way back to the car via the 199 steps, when by pure chance the sun broke back through the clouds to reveal this glorious view. I had to quickly get set up again to capture this scene.

About Richard Burdon

Richard Burdon

My work is a mixture of both colour and monochrome landscape photographs, plus a selection of creative images of the natural world which express artistic impressions of the subject. I am a big believer that artistically less is more and feel that the minimalist nature of my images transcends photography and moves into the realm of fine art. From time to time we all say “I can’t see the wood for the trees”, but can we really see? We live in a beautiful land, but few of us rarely actually see and appreciate this beauty. My photography is dedicated to the art within the landscape, for me the stark simplicity of a lone tree in a field of snow is a work of art itself.
